View Profile Krassyg, The supplied routers have a checkered history of causing issues if the local network is at all complicated beyond a couple computers. Power failures were a blessing. The day that I went direct to the ONT, all of the monkey business stopped and I’m using an older, low end Linksys router. There have been numerous updates of hardware and firmware from Verizon. I don’t think that the latest units are quite as bad, but I don’t want to risk using the supplied router. The default installation keeps the ONT’s Ethernet output disabled and connects the home network via the coax connection. Without this access, they will have some difficulty diagnosing their problems and they’ll be grumpy. A disadvantage of this arrangement is complications when setting up open ports and similar.

Let me just say how much I hate it that city councils, property owners, and service providers negotiate exclusive service provider agreements. Competition is good, and exclusivity and long service contracts leads to substandard offerings and poor service levels. The HD channel lineup and internet speed was the primary reasons for switching. About two years ago Verizon released new DVR hardware and software, a significant improvement over the old.

January 15, at 9: I have had one of the inexpensive generic boxes and one ViewTV and they do seem to required a powered USB hub or similar for the memory sticks. The generic one came set to power an antenna through the coax. It took a bit to figure out why it was getting hot. Its manual was almost useless. The ViewTV also had a normal size remote. I guess little ventured little gained.
I will say that the picture quality was surprisingly good with these inexpensive units but I am in a strong signal area. They are still available. They were packed well but the decent manuals showed some use so they must have been returns or refurbished units.
Use Own Router with FiOS ONT Ethernet
We have managed to fill the internal and external storage, but we don’t watch all the content. Like a previous poster, they are full so that we always have a variety of things to watch. Comcast man came a knocking on my door Saturday trying to get me to switch to their new X1 platform. Thing is, I just had a baby and I just have no time to spend researching and weighing my options.

How to Watch YouTube on Tivo by Andrew Mikael Though the core feature of a TiVo DVR unit remains recording television programs for later viewing, it also sports several other capabilities for watching other types of media. With a network cable connected, your TiVo can access a host of online services including Pandora radio, Netflix and YouTube. I am on my third modem in 3 weeks, all my inside lines have been replaced. The issue must be an outside line , but getting them to do something about this is hard. I have no other internet provider choice in my area. If I ever get reliable service, I want to cut out their TV. Just found out that, if I do that, those services are considered a la carte. You guys are just dumb.

This is especially true if you are a Verizon FiOS customer. I have a 50 Mbps Verizon Fios Internet only plan and I was able to eliminate the coaxial cable going to my router and use Ethernet. Eliminating the coaxial cable means you can use almost any router with FiOS internet instead of the one they force you to rent from them. This will allow you to have internet without coaxial in your house. This device takes the fiber optic signals coming from the Verizon backbone and translates them for use with devices in your house.
Typically, the technician sets up the ONT to have a Coax output. Even for Internet only customers, Verizon will still run Coax to their router and possibly charge a rental fee on the device. The picture is the part of the ONT that is accessible by the customer. However, as the Ethernet port is turned off, simply plugging in a Cat5 cable will not provide you with access to the Internet.

This is a great way to get wired networking into rooms where you have a coax connection but no ethernet, and is preferable to Wi-Fi for high-bandwidth operations like streaming video because MoCA is much faster. They claim up to mbps and while I haven’t done any specific speed tests myself, I can attest to the fact that it’s blazing fast based on using a computer hooked into the MoCA adapter. I did have an interesting thing happen with my setup that I figured I’d share in case anyone else runs into this.
Typically if you have both internet and TV they give you an Actiontec router that has both ethernet ports and a coax port on the back of it. You plug the coax from the wall into the coax port on the router, and this allows the FiOS TV set-top boxes to get IP addresses, their channel guides, and also handles video on demand. I assumed for this to work I’d have to plug one of the MCAB s into the Verizon router, so I took the coax from the wall and plugged it into the “in” on the Netgear, then took another coax cable and went from the “out” on the Netgear to the coax port on the Verizon Actiontec router.
This actually worked for a few days, but then suddenly stopped working. This was probably a coincidence but it stopped working after I threw a third MCAB onto the network. The third one worked fine for a bit and then crapped out to use a technical term.

Also, if you’ve built up some lead time on the Tivo, the FIOS remote will have an equally delayed response. My Tivo is run with a basic FIOS box and a Tivo wireless network adapter. I ran the cable from the wall to the Verizon box, then to the Tivo, then to the tv.
If I had been using FiOS equipment instead, I would have easily paid four figures more during the same time period. Plus with the TiVo I own it. So I can sell it at some point later further reducing the cost of ownership. The cheapest Roamio today does not pay for itself until month 58, almost 5 years! Like I said, love your tivo, but if its breaks , youre up shits creek. I’ve owned around thirty TiVos since
